Muslin is a closely woven, unbleached or white cloth produced from carded cotton handspun yam. It originated in Bengal, from where it travelled to Europe in the 17th century. West Bengal produces nearly 55% of the muslin produced in India. Efforts are being made to revive the fine muslin that was known worldwide.Govemment of West Bengal has initiated Project Muslin to revive weaving of higher count fine muslin. Under this project, more than 600 families with skilled spinners and weavers have been identified in Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, East Bardhaman,Hooghly, Malda and Paschim Medinipur.
